Paul Humphrey was born in Detroit. He came to Los Angeles
with Wes Montgomery (the legendary jazz guitarist) in the
early sixties and made the city his home. Paul established
himself as the drummer for Lawrence Welk although he is remembered
most by hip-hop fans for his work with Jimmy Smith (the “Root
Down” sessions particularly, as sampled by the Beastie
Boys) and his work with Monk Higgins (particularly his drum
solo on “The One Man Band Plays It All” as sampled
by Snoop Dogg and Biz Markie).
Paul is a diverse and youthful drummer who has played on
some remarkable and legendary sessions, including “Let’s
Get it On” with Marvin Gaye as well as playing with
everybody from John Coltrane to Frank Zappa – from Milt
Jackson (see De La Soul) to the Grateful Dead.
He has also produced a veritable amount of solo work, he
still tours frequently, and gigs regularly in Los Angeles
including a recent appearance on the new album by Blackalicious.
